Imogen Bankier is hoping to make it nine consecutive mixed doubles triumph and a sixth women’s doubles title at the Scottish Nationals.
The Milngavie athlete is looking to draw level with Kenny Middlemiss on nine mixed doubles wins and close in on Billy Gilliland’s record 12 in a row.
The Yonex Scottish National Badminton Championships kick-off at the Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth, next Friday and a win for the 27-year-old would make her the most successful woman in Scottish National mixed doubles, bettering the total of eight mixed titles by Elinor Middlemiss. But she has a long way to go to catch Middlemiss’s record 13 women’s doubles titles.
Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Bankier and Robert Blair are seeking to retain their mixed title. They start as clear favourites, with Gordon Thomson and Eleanor O’Donnell expected to meet them in the final after the seeds were announced this week.
The former High School of Glasgow pupil is also defending champion and top seed in the women’s doubles with Kirsty Gilmour, who is seeking a third consecutive title in this event after wins with Bankier last year and Jillie Cooper two years ago.
Blair is also defending the men’s doubles trophy he won with Paul Van Rietvelde last year and Thomson in 2013.
