Ice cool Logan aims for curling success

CHAMPION curling star Logan Gray is confident of coming through this weekend's first qualification round at the Scottish Men's Championship at the Dewar Centre in Perth.

Logan, from Balfron, was a member of the team that just missed out on a podium place at the national event last year.

However, he is determined to build on his early season success in the mixed doubles — which he won with Rachael Simms in October — when he hits the rink with fellow team-mates, skip Peter Loudon, Richard Woods and Colin Campbell.

Logan, area curling development officer for Active Stirling, said: "The men's team qualification is my number one priority and although I am confident we will get through it, we will need to be vigilant at every game."

The 23-year-old and his colleagues from Team Loudon have good reason to remain on their guard as Team Murdoch, the GB Olympic squad skipped by David Murdoch, will be looking to lift the trophy again this year.

Logan, the team's vice-captain and a member of sportscotland's Institute of Sport, said: "I'm excited about the prospect of playing against the team who will be going to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in February.

"I'm producing some good curling at the moment and the team expect to qualify for the national competition at the end of January. However we are under no illusion that this will be tough. Team Murdoch are the favourites, but we are hoping to cause an upset."

Team Loudon finished fourth last year and will be focused on pulling out all the stops at the championship which runs from January 27-31.

Cate Brewster, sportsscotland Institute of Sport high performance coach, said: "We expect them to get through this first stage and wish them luck. We have a very good chance of doing well this season."

After the Scottish men's championship Logan will be representing Scotland in the World Mixed Doubles, with Rachael Wood, between April 19-25 Chelyabinsk in Russia.

The pair qualified for the event after their victory in October.
