Gordonians defence just too strong for Wildcats

Westerm Wildcats 1

AAM Gordonians 2

Western Wildcats played at a fierce tempo in this Scottish Cup Quarter Final match at Auchenhowie.

Gordonians opened the scoring with a strike in the 5th minute and The Cats replied through Ross Clunie, whose powerful 7th minute draglick levelled the score at 1-1.

Further forays into the Western D brought the Aberdeen side close to a second goal, but a determined Western rearguard dug in and survived a string of penalty corner attempts to keep the sides level at half time.

The blistering pace of the game was maintained in the second half, but both sides struggled for control and in truth it was a scrappy period compounded by some dreadful weather conditions.

While Western had plenty of opportunities, they couldn’t find a way through and it was Gordonians who struck next via Andrew Webb in the 50th minute after a save from Sommerville was squared back across goal and slotted just beyond the big goalie’s reach.

Cue the response and Western threw everything they had at their visitors, who played the last 10 minutes with 10 men following a red card for Craig Falconer.

However, they found the Gordonians defence more than up the challenge with ex-internationalist Craig Harper and goalkeeper Tom O’Kelly both excelling.

An extra time penalty corner was Western’s last throw of the dice to force penalties, but it wasn’t to be as Clunie’s flick was saved by O’Kelly and the tie was settled with Gordonians progressing to the semi-finals, with Wildcats disappointed to go out.

It’s back to league action this Saturday as Western travel to play Watsonians in Edinburgh. The squad will continue their push for the end of season playoffs.
