Gladiator beats The Black Mamba to be crowned Scottish fight champion
SUPER-FIT mixed martial arts fighter David 'The Gladiator' Galbraith was victorious in his latest no-holds barred fight, making short work of his opponent Bobby 'The Black Mamba' McVitie in Stirling to be crowned the top lightweight fighter in Scotland.
The Milngavie fighter (24) went into the 70kg Scottish Fight Challenge in the city's Albert Halls as the underdog, but his six hour a day training in the run up to the contest paid off.
David said: "There was a lot of bad blood between us.
"I went up to shake his hand at the beginning, but he refused. He was also making gestures towards me as if he was going to knock me out.
"Obviously after this I was delighted to beat him. McVitie was the top lightweight in Scotland, but I believe he deserved to get beat because he is quite arrogant."
Despite these tensions, David kept his composure and knew he would have to weather a storm of punches and kicks which he did, making short work of Bobby with a submission tap-out three minutes and 35 seconds into the second round to pick up a purse of 300.
Strength
The lead up to the submission saw David use all his strength to pick his opponent up and slam him back down to the ground. However, this allowed Bobby the chance to move into position and attempt to trap
David in one of his trademark guillotine moves.
Unable to lock it in tight, David slipped out of the submission attempt and turned back, where he worked quickly to secure a tight rear naked choke, which left Bobby with no option but to tap-out and give The Milngavie fighter the win.
The fight was the second main event of the evening, which attracted some of the best fighters from across Scotland.
David's dad, also called David, said: "This is his passion and he trains very intensively for every bout and doesn't take anything for granted.
"He is a good all round fighter and has the focus and reactions to go far.
"There has been a lot of interest in him as far as sponsorship is concerned. This sport is massive in America and he has come a long way in a relatively short time."
David is now training for a major British title fight at bantamweight (68kg) in London next month.
