MILNGAVIE and Bearsden Swimming Club duo Calum Tait and Jack Thorpe took their place among Britain’s top swimming talent recently at the spectacular swimming venue for the 2012 Olympic games.
The duo competed in the Olympic Trials, which is the first swimming competition to be held in the new Aquatic Centre in London’s Olympic park and recorded a number of personal best times.
The lads qualified after their performances at British Youth Nationals last August.
Calum’s personal best in the 200m breaststroke was 2mins 21.72secs, and Jack took 0.5 off his 50m freestyle best in 23.84secs.
Whilst not enough to make semi-finals, the performances certainly demonstrated the potential of both to be challenging more closely in years to come.
Calum said: “Swimming in the Olympic pool is something that surpassed all of my expectations. The experience has given me a sense of how great it would be to qualify for an Olympics or a Commonwealth Games.”
Jack added: “I was delighted to pb in the 50 the week was all about getting to witness the top swimmers preparing, racing and dealing with the pressure of the ‘all-or-nothing’ trials environment.
“Having done that, and had a taste of the atmosphere it’s given me real motivation to make my mark in another Olympic pool at some stage in the future.”
