Dumbarton 4 Partick Thistle 1
IN the final friendly before the start of the serious stuff, Partick fielded a youthful side whose inexperience was apparent from the start.
Dumbarton kicked off and made a brighter start with the home side appealing for a penalty on two minutes when the ball hit Aaron Sekhon’s arm. However, the ref waved play on.
The visitors finally found their feet after a shaky start with Stuart Bannigan and David Wilson impressing in midfield and it was unfortunate the opener was not produced on nine minutes.
Wilson’s lovely through ball was collected by Martin Grehan whose cross was turned over the bar by trialist Jack Boyle.
Just three minutes later Boyle came close again but was denied by a good save.
But it was Dumbarton who took the lead in the 27th minute.
Craig Sutherland was able to escape the attention of the Thistle defence and he beat Ryan Scully with a shot that hit the net via the inside of Scully’s left-hand post.
Dumbarton almost doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, but Scully’s quick reaction kept the ball out.
Not much happened for the remainder of the half and it wasn’t until the fourth minute after the turn around that Thistle almost levelled when Boyle shot wide with only the Dumbarton keeper to beat.
Revenge came just after the hour mark though when the referee pointed to the penalty spot after sub Jordan McGrotty was barged in the box.
Kieran Burns took the penalty for Thistle to level.
However on seven minutes Dumbarton were back in front courtesy of a lovely free kick curled in by Scott Agnew.
With eight minutes remaining Dumbarton got their third goal.
Scully looked as if he had managed to get enough of a hand to Pat Walker’s shot to keep it out but the ball trickled over the line.
In the dying minutes of the game the hosts got their fourth when Kieran Brannan firing home from 20 yards as the young Thistle team started to flag.
