THE Wildcats moved up to third in Division 1 with a comfortable victory over Edinburgh University.
An in-form Scott McCartney claimed a double, either side of a Gary Maitles goal, to help seal the three points.
The Wildcats have now notched up a sixth straight victory and have added fresh optimism to their late title charge.
Head Coach Vishald Marwaha hailed his side’s recent form. He said: “It was good to keep this run going and keep the pressure on Grange and Inverleith.”
With the new pitch at Auchenhowie still not complete, Wildcats held their first home game at Strathclyde University’s Millerston facility.
They started well and gained the early advantage over the visitors.
With seven minutes gone, McCartney turned his man and left the goalkeeper no chance as he fired the ball in to the top corner of the goal from a tight angle.
The home side continued to create chances and Dougie Simpson had a reverse stick shot saved, following some fine build up play.
The Edinburgh side were awarded a couple of short corners but Gavin Sommerville produced two good saves to keep the opposition out.
Western then scored their second after a defence splitting pass found its way through to Maitles who just squeezed home despite a telling touch from the goalkeeper.
As the first half came to a close, Andrew Sewnauth saw his shot saved as did McCartney who was eager to stretch his team’s advantage.
The second half, however, was a stuffy affair in comparison with the first and it produced a couple of bookings for both Calum Grant and Niall Sommerville.
But the Wildcats kept going and enjoyed most of the possession throughout.
Their play was rewarded when a short corner found McCartney who netting his second.
The clinical hitman has now extended his scoring run to 15 goals from his last seven games.
This was another well fought out win for the Wildcats with good all-round performances from Dave Mansouri and Calum Grant.
However, special mention must also go to young Ross Clunie who put in yet another very impressive performance for the team.
