Cross country runner Catriona Graves’ recent gold in the West District championships has set her up for next February’s National Championships in Falkirk.
The 18-year-old Milngavie athlete, picked up gold in the women’s under 20 category last Saturday, finishing the five kilometre race in just 19mins 46secs at Linwood.
The former Glasgow Academy pupil, who has taken a year out before going to Edinburgh University to study medicine, is now hoping to compete in the Inter District Cross Country Championships this January in Edinburgh.
She is then hoping to compete in the National Championships at Callendar Park, Falkirk in February. Last year she won the U17 category and is hoping to do the same in the higher age group.
She said: “I will be in the under 20 age group this year which is a bit tougher, It would be great to win, but I will be happy with a top three place.”
Her coach John Bell, who has coached the promising young athlete for just over a year said: “She has been running since she was nine and is very, very good in cross country hill running. She is not so good on the track, but that is something she is working on now.”
After the nationals Catriona will go to Ethiopia to train with Ethiopian runner, on a programme called e Yaya Girls.
