British medal joy for ice skater Heather
TOP teenage star Heather Sneddon beat off tough competition to win a silver medal at the British Solo Ice Dance Championships in Sheffield.
Heather (15), from Deepdene Road, Bearsden, finished second in the very competitive under-16 age group at the two-day event, and was the only Scottish competitor to win a medal.
She performed three exhausting routines to win the silver, and admitted it had been a nerve-racking experience.
The Boclair Academy pupil, who has just finished her standard grades, said: "I was nervous beforehand and a bit scared, but was really happy after I had finished my three routines.
"I've won the Scottish championship before, in Dumfries, and in the British championships two years ago I came third, so this is another great achievement."
Heather performed a compulsory dance followed by an original dance consisting of a set rhythm to rock and roll music.
Her last routine was a free dance where she could express herself with her own movements and the music of her choice. She chose music by Enigma for the performance.
The judges commended her for the skill and expression that she showed in the execution of all the routines.
Noel Grimshaw, ice dance director for Sk8scotland, who organise competitive skating in Scotland, said: "It was very good to have Heather, one of our Scottish medallists, achieve a medal in this top solo championship.
"She has really benefited from her early ballroom dancing background which has stood her in good stead."
Heather is a member of Paisley Ice Dance and Figure Skating Club, which is now based in Braehead.
However, with the Braehead rink closed for the summer, Heather wakes up at 5am every Saturday and Sunday to travel to Kilmarnock Ice Rink and Murrayfield for training.
