Allander Squash Club beat Newland 3-2 in a tough encounter that saw experience triumph over youthful enthusiasm.
FIRST on for Allander at position 5 was a distinctly under-form Jaco Ferreira,. He never found top gear against his experienced female opponent. She slowed the game right down and Jaco struggled to scrape many of her gentle and accurate drops off the floor. A determined fightback in the third game never quite made it and he lost 3-0.
Chris McGeedy at position 1 steadied the ship with a masterclass in how to beat talented teenagers with accuracy and stamina. He dominated the court cruised to a 3-0 victory.
Phil Graves played next at 3 and he was well-matched against a hardened veteran. Phil narrowly lost the first but a typical ruthless determined and dogged effort saw the fitter man stagger off the winner, with a 3-1 victory to Phil.
Gregory Dudziak came on at 4 and the match could not have been more finely balanced with both players running around relentlessly in an entertaining tussle. Allander thought the night was in the bag at 2-1 to Gregory but the scores drew level. The last game swung both ways, reaching 13-13 at one stage before Gregory knocked two consecutive balls down to lose the match 3-2.
So it was left to the number 2 strings to decide the evening with the clock well past 10pm. Stuart Harvey had a hard physical game but won all games for a 3-0 win.
