Alexandra Mennie of Douglas Park Golf Club was one of 16 young golfers who teed off recently after being invited to play in a Ryder Cup team challenge at Gleneagles.
The challenge match was played on the PGA Centenary Course which will be used for next year’s eagerly awaited Ryder Cup - the first in Scotland for 41 years.
Alex played in a team that included Tom Watson and had the experience of a lifetime playing with, and getting advice from, one of golf’s great masters.
The young golfer teed-off in front of a huge crowd on the first hole, but held herself together with a few nerve-calming tips from captain Tom, even going on to hole a very tricky, 20ft putt.
Alex said: “It was definitely one of the best experiences of my life. I will never experience anything like this again. It was actually okay being first to tee off. Tom was very calming and taught me how to deal with my nerves by taking deep breaths.
“I just thought, everyone is here to watch, so just enjoy the moment. The putt I sunk was one of the best and most memorable. To hole it in front of such a huge crowd was great.”
