VANDALS set fire to a play park - as tearful youngsters watched.
Kids looked on in horror as flames engulfed their beloved ‘gang hut’ and climbing frame.
Police are probing the blaze at Mosshead Park, in Bearsden, which destroyed part of the recently revamped play area.
The fire broke out at around 9.15pm on Tuesday night.
A wooden hut and a climbing frame were engulfed in flames, which firefighters took half an hour to extinguish.
Safety fencing has been placed around the site while a council team remove the scorched and mangled wreckage.
The popular play park, near Kilmardinny Loch, was re-fitted with state of the art equipment earlier this year after a fundraising effort by Kilmardinny PALS (Play Park and Loch Scheme).
Mum Gaynor Broomfield’s children Theo (4) and Sophie Marie (6) regularly use the park.
She said: “It’s absolutely terrible. Sophie was in tears when she found out what happened.
“All the kids use it, it’s very popular. They regarded the wooden house as their gang hut. It was this that was set alight.
“Some of the children whose houses back onto it were still up and mums have told me they were in tears as they watched it burn.”
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue confirmed that two appliances attended the blaze. It is understood that police believe it was ‘wilful’ and an investigation has been launched.
