West Highland Way safety work finished

DAMAGED and dangerous metal grills at the underpass near Milngavie Train Station have now been fixed.

The Herald previously reported concerns by Provost Eric Gotts that sharp metal end pieces had been bent forward to form spikes.

A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council said at the time that they would remove the hazard and look into a more permanent solution. The work has now been completed.

Provost Eric Gotts said: “I have been warning the council for some time about the need to deter vandalism of the metal grills and was very concerned about the safety risk to passers by, especially children.

“I am pleased to report that the exposed metal edges have now been covered with custom-made stainless steel panels which are bolted to the wall behind.

“I believe that this will make it much more difficult for the end pieces to be bent outward into metal spikes.”
