THE UK Votes At 16 Coalition held an action week recently to support an e-petition which was sent to the government by a local member of the Scottish Youth Parliament.
Patrick Harvie MSP (Green Party, Glasgow) has also lodged a motion with the Scottish parliament to support lowering the voting age to 16 in all elections and referendums.
Milngavie and Bearsden North MSYP Ross Greer, said: “It’s fantastic to see support for the petition across the whole of the United Kingdom.
“I’ve heard of activities from Aberdeen and Edinburgh to London, and Cardiff. Across the UK thousands of supporters are getting together and campaigning for votes at 16 in a way that we’ve never done before.
“This is a huge national effort and I am so grateful to everyone for having supported my e-petition as the focus of the campaign.
“It should be obvious. At 16 you can start a family, join the military and be taxed on your income; you can even marry your MP but you cannot vote for them. Sixteen and 17 year olds are being denied a basic right that they so fundamentally deserve and finally the Government is beginning to take notice.
“This is a historic time for Scotland in particular and the clear commitment of the Scottish Government to allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote in the referendum should be celebrated but we have a long way yet to go before the right to vote is extended not just for this one off but for every election and referendum.”
