A LOCAL member of the Scottish Youth Parliament joined over 1,000 campaigners on Valentine’s Day to demand equal marriage rights for same sex couples.
Ross Greer, MSYP for Milngavie and Bearsden North, marched with protesters in the Love Equally demo down the Royal Mile to the Scottish Parliament.
Organised as part of the Scottish Youth Parliament’s Love Equally campaign, it brought together student unions, equality organisations, religious groups and others to ask for the laws surrounding marriage to be equalised for same sex couples.
Ross Greer, a sixth year pupil at Bearsden Academy, said: “The march was a fantastic display of the support this campaign receives, with over five times the support of the ‘Scotland for Marriage’ opposition demonstration some months back.
“We will not rest until every couple is treated equally before the law, we simply demand nothing less than absolute equality. Public opinion is overwhelmingly on our side and the government is beginning to listen.
“An MSP put this best when he said that for his generation this was still a debate but for mine it was not. We see the answer as obvious. Love does not discriminate so why should we?”
The Scottish government is currently reviewing over 22,000 responses to its consultation on equal marriage legislation, the largest response to any consultation in the parliament’s history. A bill is likely to be introduced to the parliament early next year and is expected to pass with ease.
