Europe All-Stars squad finished on a high in Jakarta last week when they defeated Vietnam 3-1 to secure fifth place in the eight-team, 11-day US $1m Axiata Cup.
Milngavie’s Imogen Bankier was part of the team, which also included mixed doubles partner Robert Blair and Kirsty Gilmour, who missed out on a trip to Kuala Lumpur for the semi-finals and finals, but they did net a share of the $50,000 for coming fifth behind league leaders Indonesia, Asia All-Stars, Thailand and defending champions Malaysia.
The only disappointment for the Scottish trio at the world’s richest badminton event was Gilmour’s defeat in a close match. She went down 21-8 17-21 21-18 against Vu Thi Trang in 54 minutes with the women’s singles once again the longest match of the contest.
Reigning Scottish Open mixed doubles champions Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier edged out Dao Manh Thang and Pham Nhu Thao 21-15 18-21 21-15 to clinch the 3-1 triumph and ensure Europe matched their fifth place finish of last year.
