Protect hedgehogs from bonfires

WITh Guy Fawkes’ Night just around the corner people are being asked to check that hedgehogs are not using Bonfires to hiberate in this autumn.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society is urging householders to put chickenwire around the base of large fires to prevent the animals from straying into then and getting burnt alive.

The Society is also asking people building bonfires to make sure they are put on open ground and not on top of a pile of leaves.

All fires should also be checked before lighting just to make double sure no hedgehogs have crept in unseen.
