A fantastic night of entertainment has been lined -up as a tribute to a popular Milngavie man who tragically died from a rare form of cancer.
Gary Sloan was only 34 when he passed away in February last year after a year-long battle with Sarcoma Cancer.
He was diagnosed with the illness, which affects muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons and blood vessels, just two days after his first son Zak was born in August 2012.
Gary’s widow Simone (35) and sister-in-law Zoe Arnot, with help from Gary’s family, have organised the event which will be held in Milngavie Town Hall on Saturday, March 22, at 7.30pm, to raise funds for Sarcoma UK.
Britain’s Got Talent star Edward Reid will be the headline act and there will also be dancers, singers, food, a raffle/auction and a disco to end the evening.
Gary and Simone first started dating when they were only 17-years-old, whilehe was a pupil at Boclair Academy, Bearsden, and she was at Douglas Academy, Milngavie.
He decided then that he’d marry Simone one day.
But they went their separate ways for many years and during that time Simone travelled and worked abroad.
They eventually got back together just over three years ago.
A very popular man around the Milngavie and Bearsden area, Gary was a taxi driver and a keen bowler at Killermont Bowling Club in Bearsden.
He won a championship despite suffering from pain in his back and legs due to the cancer. He also played the keyboard at charity gigs.
Zoe said: “Gary was always so upbeat, when people visited him at the Beatson he often ended up cheering them up!
“He joked that he couldn’t believe that he had to get cancer for me and him to be able to sit down and have a proper conversation!
“Everyone misses him terribly and Simone wanted to help others with the same type of cancer.
“We hope this event can fund some clinical trials.
“Everyone who has donated has been incredibly generous and we’d like to thank them for being so kind.”
Raffle prizes include 1st class London sleeper tickets, overnight stays at various hotels, beauty packages, signed football shirts, sports centre memberships, studio recording and many more.
It’s a BYOB event. Tickets cost £25 (includes a fish supper) and are available from Simone’s facebook page or simonesloan@justgiving
