P1 children will stay a full day at school from August 2015

Children starting Primary School in East Dunbartonshire from August 2015 will now stay in school for the full day from the first Monday in September, following a review of current practices.

The move comes after the council ran a consultation exercise during October/November 2014 asking parents if they wanted to see a change to the existing arrangements. Currently P1 pupils attend for mornings only until after the September weekend.

Education convener, Councillor Eric Gotts was pleased that almost 1,000 responses were received.

He said: “We felt it was important to listen to the views of local families on this issue. There are different arrangements in different Council areas and we felt it was time to look again at ours.”

It was clear from the findings that the majority of parents wanted to see change as only 22 per cent of respondents wished things to stay the same. The results of the survey were:

• 41.4 per cent wanted full day attendance from the start of the August term

• 36.8 per cent wanted full day attendance from the first week in September

• 21.8 per cent wanted no change

Councillor Gotts added: “Taking these views and those of school staff and Trade Unions into account, the committee agreed that from the next school year, starting on August 17, 2015, P1 pupils should begin full-time education from the first week in September.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to help us with this survey. Consultation like this ensures that everyone who has an opinion is given the opportunity to express it and help us shape our services in the best way possible.”
