Operation Christmas Child launched

THE Samaritans are calling on people in the area to help them deliver their 100 millionth shoebox this Christmas.

The Charity’s Operation Christmas Child (OCC) campaign has, over the last 22 years, delivered 94 million shoe boxes to children in need in over 100 countries - bringing them gifts of joy at the festive period.

Churches, schools, workplaces, families and individuals in East Dunbartonshire are now being asked to help achieve a remarkable milestone.

East Dunbartonshire Regional Manager for Operation Christmas Child, Chris Thomson, said: “We are one of the UK’s largest annual children’s charity projects, distributing over one million gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children at Christmas time last year. The challenge for us now is to grow East Dunbartonshire’s contribution to this global programme, so we’re asking everyone across the region to help us achieve that.”

Last year shoeboxes from supporters in Bearsden and Milngavie helped to the overall total of more than 2,300 gift-filled shoeboxes that were distributed to vulnerable children in Belarus and Serbia.
