PARENTS of secondary school pupils in Milngavie and Bearsden now have the option of paying for their children’s meals securely online.
All students in senior schools across East Dunbartonshire have been issued with a personalised account and PIN number that can be credited via the council’s website using a debit or credit card.
Councillor Una Walker, convener for education, said: “East Dunbartonshire Council is keen to explore ways of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its school meals service.
“Since the online payment system launched late last year we have seen a positive impact on the uptake of secondary school meals. The system provides peace of mind for parents as their children can’t lose their money or spend it on other purchases.”
A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council said: “The cashless payment system has many advantages for both pupil and parent including reduced cash handling and banking of daily cash, and an increased uptake of school meals which increases health and wellbeing.”
Additionally, larger payments can be deposited, there can be daily spending limits for both morning break and lunch, payments made before midnight will be credited to pupils’ cashless catering account the following morning, free school lunch pupils have anonymity and there is the option of top ups for impulse buys.
Parents who are unable to access a computer can still make payment using cash or cheque via the pupil to the revaluation unit or school catering office.
