LOCAL MP Jo Swinson is urging young men in Milngavie and Bearsden to sign up to help save the lives of people with blood cancer.
All MPs have been asked to recruit at least 10 men aged 18 to 30 to join the Anthony Nolan stem cell register.
Despite this age group being the best source of stem cells and accounting for 80 per cent of current donations, they make up just 19 per cent of the total register.
The Anthony Nolan charity’s register matches donors willing to donate their blood stem cells to people in desperate need of life-saving transplants and Jo has written to local youth groups and sports teams asking guys to sign up.
Ms Swinson said: “About 1,600 people in the UK currently need a potentially life-saving stem cell transplant, but Anthony Nolan can only find a matching donor for half of them.
By joining the register more young men could give patients the chance of life.
“Every new donor could be saving lives by Christmas.”
