THE Ministry of Defence is helping police with their inquiries into the recent find of firearms at a property in Killermont, Bearsden.
A cache of guns including two AK-47 assault rifles, a shotgun, two handguns, an SA-80, which is the standard issue British Army service rifle, ammunition and packets of what could have been high explosives, were discovered last Thursday.
The weapons were found by Gary Atkinson who was tending to the horses he owns in the stable at the former Kessington Farm.
A bag containing the guns fell out of a black bin which was in a neighbouring field near the house after he accidentally kicked it and it fell over, and he alerted Jeff Kearns, one of the residents.
SA-80 rifles are issued to the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force and they have a serial number which can be traced to a specific unit within the armed forces.
The police described the find as ‘significant’. No-one has been charged in relation to the incident.
