Five Milngavie mums are under starter’s orders for the Great Scottish Run 10k and half marathon to raise money for St Margaret’s of Scotland Hospice.
The ladies - Jacquie McAllister, Emma Whitfield, Geraldine Scott, Giulia Adam and Paula Speirs - who are all members of a running group called the ‘Mummy Milers’ are going to walk or run the route on October 5 in memory of their good friend Angela Nicol who used to run with them and spent the last few months of her life at the hospice, and Jacquie’s dad who also received palliative care there.
Jacquie said: “They both received so much support from the committed staff at St Margaret’s that we would like to acknowledge their attentiveness and kindness by fundraising for them to ensure they are able to provide this comfort and reassurance to others who are in need now and in the future.”
Geraldine added: “Angela had started training with us for a big run so we thought this would be a nice tribute to her.
“She’s very much still with us in spirit, she was a very positive person and very active right up until last autumn.”
Angela, a former St Joseph’s Primary pupil and John Paul Academy, passed away in St Margaret’s Hospice on April 16 this year.
The married mum of two girls, Anna (11) and Sophie (7) fought a long and brave battle after she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of kidney cancer when she was only 39. Her kidney was removed but the cancer returned just six months later and eventually spread to her lungs.
Despite her ill health Angela completed the West Highland Way two years ago with a friend and they raised nearly £20,000 for the Beatson Cancer Research Institute - the second highest individual donation the Beatson has ever received. St Margaret of Scotland Hospice is Scotland’s oldest and largest hospice providing 30 beds for care of older adults with special medical, nursing and palliative needs - 27 for palliative care, three for exceptional cases, providing the highest standard of care for patients and carers through multi-professional team working. Mummy Milers meet on North Campbell Avenue in Milngavie every Tuesday evening at 8.30pm and new members are welcome - all fitness levels.
