If the thought of Christmas shopping has you reaching for the sherry and a mince pie instead of your wallet, fear not.

A day spent Christmas shopping doesn’t have to be one trapped in heaving crowds hellbent on excess and very little festive joy.

Instead, with a wee bit of careful consideration you can support your local shopkeepers and find something that little bit different this year.

And before you all say ‘‘I need Silverburn or Sauchiehall Street to make it a real day out’’, think again. Milngavie, Bearsden and the surrounding areas have much more than you might think.

For a start, there’s no transport cost to factor in, or the nightmare of finding an elusive, and costly, parking space. And remember, Milngavie is investing in car parking with significantly more spaces in place in time for Christmas this year, and parking is currently free in council-owned car parks.

You can simply take a leisurely stroll along the streets and find independent traders and quirky retailers with that little bit different on offer.

Is there a sports fan in the family? What about a golf club or gym subscription? You don’t find many fairways on the fair streets of Glasgow!

Or do you have an art lover who would like a unique piece of work or a limited edition print run? Independent art galleries are what you need.

Stocking fillers can also be picked up in many local shops, along with cards and wrapping paper.

Every pound spent in our own community boosts the local economy and helps keep our shops going, making Milngavie and Bearsden a diverse and thriving place to live.
