A bad smash on the M8 motorway involving a lorry has brought traffic to a standstill.

The lorry jack-knifed across the lanes at junction six, smashing into the central reservation.

The M8 has been closed eastbound.

The accident occurred at Newhouse at around 11.30am today, near the Eurocentral business park.

Traffic is backed up to junction five at Shotts, with the westbound lanes also affected and emergency services in attendance.

It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the accident.

One witness, Jack Symes, posted on Facebook: “Very bad smash at junction six on Newhouse, wish I never saw this.”

Another witness, Hayley Sarah Dornan, wrote: “Looks pretty serious, no driver to be seen but there were an awful lot of fire engines and ambulances trying to get in.

“It looks like the driver actually crashed into the outer barrier and then smashed through the inside barrier, pretty bad as the cabin of the lorry has been twisted backward!!”
