Yobs spoil Milngavie beauty spot

LITTER louts are spoiling a beauty spot in Milngavie by leaving behind beer cans, carrier bags, sleeping bags, used toilet rolls, socks and supermarket trolleys.

Groups of youths have been camping overnight in the woodland area near the iron bridge on Clober Road, which is also near the start of the West Highland Way.

As well as leaving litter, patches of the grass have been burnt with disposable barbecues and branches have been ripped off trees to be used as firewood.

Ashleigh Martin (21), from Clober Road, said: "Not only are they leaving a mess they are behaving in a way that intimidates many local residents.

"I saw some guys one day at about 3pm very drunk and one of them defecated on a wall, it was really disgusting.

"Often they push a trolley filled with booze from Tesco and use the woods as a drinking den.

"This is an ongoing problem and has become noticeably worse over the past couple of years.

"They aren't being disturbed by the police and show no concern for the nature around them. Many people use the area for dog walking, mountain biking, a day out with the family or as a route to Mugdock Park.

"This problem must be addressed — a beautiful piece of nature should not be ruined by carelessness and negligence of people who should know better."

Local MP Jo Swinson is also outraged by the behaviour of these vandals.

She said: "I grew up in Milngavie and have a genuine affection for the area so it's upsetting to see it being ruined."

Des Clark, community safety officer in Milngavie, said: "Officers do patrol the woodland area and are eager to stop such vandalism and anti-social behavior, however we need help from local people who use the woods and know where the 'hotspots' are so we can let our presence be felt in such places."

A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council said: "The West Highland Way is cleaned once a week but when we were made aware of a particular build-up of litter between recent visits, we sent a crew back to sort out the mess.

"The majority of people who visit the area treat it with respect and use the bins provided or take their litter home, however unfortunately there are those with no regard for the environment or other people.

"We are always happy to respond to calls from local people about this type of situation. The number to call is 0845 045 4514."
