CALLOUS thieves have stolen a bronze plaque from the Allander Walkway in Milngavie which was put there in memory of a bomb disposal expert who died in the Falklands War.
Robert McCallum (69) from Milngavie noticed the tribute to Staff Sergeant Jim Prescott, on Prescott Bridge near Rangers football training ground on Auchenhowie Road, was missing when he was walking along with his two-year-old grandson, Callum.
Mr McCallum, a volunteer with Milngavie In Bloom, said: “I think it’s tragic – especially when you realise they will get a very small amount of money for it.
“It’s poignant that it was placed there for someone who was killed while doing such vital work during the war.
“I’m sad that it was targeted.
“Whoever did it broke the concrete underneath to remove the security bolts.”
Staff Sergeant Jim Prescott (37) died instantly when a 1,000lbs bomb went off on board HMS Antelope, which sank the following day.
A photograph of the frigate engulfed in an enormous fireball became one of the defining images of the 1982 conflict with Argentina.
Staff Sergeant Prescott, of the Royal Engineers, was posthumously awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for his brave actions.
The citation that described his heroics concluded: ‘Staff Sergeant Prescott displayed courage of the highest order in persevering with attempts to defuse the bomb in HMS Antelope, fully aware that the condition was particularly dangerous.’
The stolen bronze memorial plaque to Staff Sergeant Prescott was erected in 1990 by the Royal Engineers.
