Up for the challenge

More and more young people are taking up the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

Last year, 247 awards were handed out in East Dunbartonshire – 25 per cent higher than in 2012.

Participants achieved nine gold, 81 silver and 157 bronze medals.

Maureen Henry, vice-convener of East Dunbartonshire Council’s education committee, said: “This astonishing figure means that one in five young people aged 16-17 in our area is part of this hugely prestigious award.”
