The fight continues to save Westerton Primary School in Bearsden
WESTERTON Town Hall was packed for a recent public meeting about the primary schools consultation.
Around 180 people turned up to voice concerns about proposals by East Dunbartonshire Council to close Westerton Primary School. The council wants to merge it with Colquhoun Park Primary on a new site in Westerton behind the existing hall and library.
But residents fear that if this happens they will lose the playing fields, bowling club and tennis courts, as well as the last nursery in the village which meets in the hall.
They are also worried that they would be unable to access the library and hall during school hours, because the security of school pupils would have to be made a priority in a shared building.
Those attending the meeting, which was organised by Bearsden West Community Council, voted unanimously for ‘no confidence in the process of the schools consultation’ and several new issues were raised on the night.
Alastair Ewan, chairperson of Westerton Garden Suburb Residents’ Association, is concerned that the site is not big enough for a school of 500 pupils.
He says Westerton is the only example in Scotland of the garden suburb movement and is protected as an area of outstanding conservation.
The former architectural technician said: “I can’t understand why this has not even been taken into account and it has got so far.
“The new school would have to be multi-storey, at least four floors or more, and this would not be allowed in a conservation area.
“The land was also donated to the council before the Second World War to be used as an area of recreation.”
He added: “I believe a better solution would be to refurbish the current Westerton Primary School to bring it up to modern day standards.”
