The bosses

THE West of Scotland Laundry was owned by Robert Learmont and Joseph Fairlie — both were also to hold the post of provost of Milngavie.

They established a laundry in 1882 at a site now occupied by the Scout Hall in Main Street. As the business expanded they built new premises in Clober Road, close to its junction with Craigton Road.

Sixteen shops in Glasgow acted as receiving centres and at its peak the laundry employed 200 people.
