Tesco launches plans for new store

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has announced plans for a new store that’s “right for Milngavie” - just weeks after an appeal to build a monster superstore was kicked out.
Tesco chiefs say they will consult with the local community in order to deliver a new store that provides a modern shopping experience for local residents, creates new jobs and keeps people shopping locally.
The supermarket is working to design a store that’s right for the town on the site of its existing store, in Gavin’s Mill Road, and this week submitted a proposal of application notice to East Dunbartonshire Council.
Tesco had its appeal against a council decision to block them from building a two-storey store and two-storey car park knocked back by the Scottish Government.
The government reporter’s main criticisms focused on the impact the new store would have caused to the setting of Gavin’s Mill listed building.
Gloria Coats, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said: “Our existing store has served the Milngavie community for many years and remains incredibly popular.
“However, in its current form, the store is cramped and unable to offer the modern shopping experience and range of goods that our customers tell us they want.
“We remain committed to bringing this investment to Milngavie, to creating jobs, and to building a better and more environmentally friendly store which will keep people shopping locally.”
She added: “Following the recent appeal decision we recognise the need to reconsider the design of the previously submitted scheme and we will be consulting with the local community to make sure we get that right.
“We want to deliver a store that’s right for Milngavie and that keeps people shopping both at our store and the whole of the town centre. We look forward to working with the community to make this happen.”
Community group We Like Milngavie was set up to fight plans for the superstore. Locals felt it was too big for the area and were concerned about the impact it would have on the landscape and the extra traffic it would generate.
The application was made as we went to press and we should have more details on Tesco’s plans in next week’s issue.
