Support grows to keep Bearsden on the map

A CAMPAIGN for the retention of Bearsden in the name of the proposed new electoral constituency is continuing to attract support.

As previously reported, under a review by the Boundary Commission it is proposed the name of the re-drawn constituency should be Milngavie and Bishopbriggs.

Bearsden will continue to be part of the constituency and with 28,000 residents councillors and community organisations believe strongly the name Bearsden should be retained.

The proposal for the name change went to a consultation which closed on March 14 and all parties on East Dunbartonshire Council backed a decision that the council should formally write to the Boundary Commission by that date, requesting the new constituency name be Bearsden, Milngavie and Bishopbriggs.

East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson was last week continuing to collect signatures for her petititon calling for the retention of the Bearsden name and explained: "The local response to the proposal has been very strong. People can't see the sense in leaving Bearsden's name out of the new constituency.

"Between now and when the Boundary Commission presents its final proposals, I will be keeping the Commission updated on the rising number of residents backing the proposed change to make sure Bearsden is properly represented."
