Two of Scotland’s leading sporting chiefs have given their support to East Dunbartonshire’s first ever Sport Rocks! Festival.

The endorsements from the chief executives of Glasgow 2014 and sportscotland are a major coupe for the parent-organised event of sporting fun for children of all ages.

Taking place on Saturday, June 7 at Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club, Auchenhowie Road, Milngavie from 11.30am to 4pm, Sports Rocks! aims to encourage young people and their families to try out different sports and physical activities.

Local sports clubs and associations will deliver sport taster sessions on the day including archery, fencing, shinty, tennis, football, rugby and much more.

Sports Rocks! will also hold a mini Commonwealth Games on the day as part of the excitement building ahead of Glasgow’s hosting of the event at the end of July to the start of August.

David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, said: “The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be the largest sporting and cultural event ever held in Scotland.

“We aim to inspire people to take up sport or physical activity through the power of the Games and it is exciting to see locally-driven initiatives like Sport Rocks! providing a true call to action for youngsters and their families to get active in community sport.”

Stewart Harris, CEO, sportscotland said: “Sport Rocks! is a fantastic, innovative local event which brings together a sporting community in Milngavie and Bearsden.

“sportscotland has ambition to lead the development of a world class sporting system at every level throughout Scotland and a key element is bringing schools and clubs together.

“Even more importantly, this event is being driven by parents of the young people in the school and local community and that leadership is commended. I hope that Sport Rocks! well into the future.”

The festival of sporting fun has been organised by Bearsden Primary School’s Fundraising Group and is open to people across East Dunbartonshire.

Adele Crothall one of the lead organisers of Sports Rocks! and a member of Bearsden Primary Schools’ Fundraising Group, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have these endorsements and words of support from two of the most influential people in the Scottish sport.

“It really proves that if you throw yourself into organising something that is worthwhile and of benefit to the community people will come with you on the journey. And before you know it you have something amazing!
