Power down for global Earth Hour
PEOPLE are being urged to take part in this year’s Earth Hour - a world-wide power-down aimed at highlighting climate change.
Households and businesses are being asked to turn out the lights between 8.30 and 9.30pm on Saturday, March 23.
East Dunbartonahire Council is backing the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Earth initiative, and has been named for the second time as a Super Local Authority for its continued support of the climate change agenda.
As well as the power-down, this year’s event goes ‘beyond the hour’, focusing on long term actions and lasting benefits.
Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of the Council’s Development and Infrastructure Committee, said: “We are doing some ambitious work around renewable energy with solar panels at St. Andrew’s Primary in Milngavie and plans for others at Boclair and Lenzie academies.
“A biomass system, which is run on Scottish wood pellets, will be installed at Holy Family Primary in Lenzie very soon. This is a carbon-neutral source of heat and will qualify the council for Renewable Heat Incentive money from central government.
“The WWF has expressed an interest in showcasing our ideas to other organisations across the UK which is a ringing endorsement of our efforts.”
In addition to focussing on renewable energy, the council is promoting local food growing.
A group has recently met to discuss forming an East Dunbartonshire-wide Local Food Forum to boost local food growing by bringing people together to share good practice, offer support to existing projects and stimulate new activity.

“Already it’s looking to be another great year with communities up and down the country joining together with others from around the world in a dramatic hour of action on climate change.
“East Dunbartonshire’s decision to promote WWF’s Earth Hour highlights its commitment to this issue. We hope lots of individuals, community groups and local organisations feel inspired to take part too.”
This year in addition to lights-out at iconic Scottish locations like Edinburgh Castle, WWF is encouraging everyone to show their support for the switch to a better energy future.

Councillor Moir added: “As a council and as the area’s biggest employer, we are serious about our commitment to becoming greener in the way we do business.
