Milngavie MSP Gil Paterson has submitted a motion in the Scottish Parliament praising Douglas Academy for winning the Referendum Schools Debate Final at Glasgow University, which was broadcast on Scottish Television.

The debating team won against stiff opposition from eight other finalists from throughout Scotland.

Mr Paterson said: “The students won the debate by confident, articulated reasoning and are a credit to their school and their families. Congratulations to everyone involved in this tremendous win.”

The Douglas Academy debating team is also one of four finalists in this year’s Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Final on Thursday, June 5 in the Scottish Parliament.

Organised and run by The Law Society of Scotland, all Scottish Secondary schools were invited to participate with 128 teams (256 pupils) from across Scotland entering this year’s competition.

There were 32 first round heats, 16 second round heats and four semi-finals.

Mr Paterson said: “This is another great achievement from the excellent Douglas team. I wish them every success in the final.”
