EVERY parent who has been through it will know that the teenage years of a child’s life are challenging and at times stressful.
This is why five mums from Milngavie and Bearsden, who have 12 teenagers between them, have been supporting each other over the past couple of years.
When things got really tough they decided to do a parenting course a few years ago which is designed for those who look after children and teenagers aged 11 to 18.
One of the mums, Jill Morrison from Milngavie, said: “As we found the course so helpful we’d like to share it with the wider community.
“Parenting is something we all struggle with at times and it is just so encouraging to discover other parents who are experiencing similar issues.
“None of us claims to be an expert but this course helped each one of us.”
Jill, who has three teenage boys aged 19, 17 and 15, added: “I think the teenage years are a real challenge and boys especially are not very communicative.
“The early years are physically demanding and teenage years are emotionally demanding.
“It’s great to meet up with other parents and find out they are having the same problems and you are not such a terrible parent after all.
“The course is brilliant, it really helped me as I learned from other parents experiences.
“Sometimes we give each other advice and it’s reassuring to know we are all struggling together.”
The course was developed by Relationship Central in 1997 and presented by Nicky and Sila Lee, who were also involved in developing a marriage course.
It’s quite informal, starts with refreshments and everyone watches a DVD which is followed by informal discussion.
Endorsed by the National Parenting Initiative the course runs for five weeks from Wednesday, May 1 to May 29 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Bearsden Baptist Church and the cost - £5 - covers a workbook and refreshments.
