Objectors stirred up over restaurant bid

COMMUNITY activists have objected to plans which could see a new restaurant open in Milngavie.
If permission is granted for a change of use at Douglas House, 44 Main Street, the former kitchen and bedroom showroom could perhaps even become a take-away.
An application has been submitted to East Dunbartonshire Council by David Castles, of Scotmore Development Ltd.
The convenor of Milngavie Community Council, Fiona Risk, said: “The plans in the application are not detailed.
“They don’t show where a kitchen would be located and if adequate vents would be fitted.
“People who live in the flats above are worried that there may be a strong smell of food coming from below. If there is a take-away element they may also be disturbed by noise late at night.
“It’s very near the Talbot Arms pub so customers may come from there to the take-away late at night.”
Thomas Glen, head of development and enterprise at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “We have received an objection to this application from Milngavie Community Council. The application will therefore be referred to a future planning board for consideration and a decision.”
The owner of Cyan restaurant in Milngavie’s Stewart Street has also applied for planning permission to extend his premises into the council’s former social work department - Stewart House at 16 Stewart Street.
David Cowan intends to create a function suite on the first floor which was previously office space. It will include a restaurant and bar and a roof terrace.
Mr Cowan said: “We host a lot of private events in our restaurant which means that we have to close to the public as our current premises are limited.
“We are excited about being able to offer people in the area with somewhere suitable to hold events such as wedding or christening receptions.
“Since the loss of the Black Bull hotel there aren’t many suitable places for functions to be held in the area. We will be able to cater for about 80 to 100 people in the new function suite.
“In addition, people will be able to enjoy a cocktail or champagne on the roof terrace on summer days.”
Milngavie Community Council has not formally objected to this application but has raised concerns about a lack of parking in the area and whether there may be noise from the roof terrace during the evenings.
However, Mr Cowan says the roof terrace is very enclosed and noise will be kept to a minimum.
