SUCCESSFUL Bearsden businesswoman, Joyce Young, thought it was a wind-up when she received a letter saying she was going to be awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

The founder of special occasion/wedding wear shop By Storm on Milngavie Road, Bearsden says the award was a ‘complete surprise - but a lovely one.’

Joyce (59) set up the company in 1993 with help from her husband Maurice and it has grown from strength to strength over the years and now employs 20 people.

The driven lady is a Glasgow School of Art graduate, where she studied interior design and embroidery, and she has been in the textile industry since 1975.

Maurice has also been in the industry since the 1960s.

Joyce also has a studio and factory in Maryhill with an outlet store with samples of fabrics and trimmings and she opened a shop in the west end of London in 1999 to cater for customers in the south of England and from abroad as they can fly more easily to the city.

Tartan Spirit was also started by Joyce in 2005 - it offers contemporary tartan outfits and accessories and caters for tartan weddings, which she says is a niche market.

She said: “By Storm is in its 20th year now - it’s amazing.

“We are one of the only businesses to be doing what we do at our level - design, manufacture and retail.

“The company has grown so much - I have pushed it forward over the years.

“Our customers come from far and wide such as the highlands and islands in Scotland and from abroad.

“What we do is a bit different, everything is bespoke and we have a complete range of designs.

“Customers can choose the fabric and colour so their outfit is customised for them.”

By Storm also scooped the prestigious VOWS industry award last year.

She added: “I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without help from my husband and staff.

“He has helped me build the business - he’s been so supportive.

“I’d like to thank him and my highly skilled team of staff.

“It’s a great honour to get this award but it’s not just for me it’s for everyone.

“I think it recognises all our hard work and determination over the years.”
