OAP in Bearsden carjack terror
A PENSIONER was dragged out of her car while it was parked on a Bearsden street — by a thug who then drove off in it.
The 67-year-old Bearsden woman was extremely shaken up but uninjured after the terrifying ordeal which happened when she was sitting in the driver's seat of her blue Renault Clio near Oddbins on Hillfoot Drive, Bearsden, at about 10.20pm on Saturday night.
A man approached her car, opened the door, grabbed her, tried to pull her out and shouted at her to get out. Then he jumped in and drove off towards Bearsden.
The traumatised woman ran into the nearby petrol station, Hillfoot Autos, to get help.
The woman, who asked not to be named, said: "I had only just got into my car and he was standing in front of it so I couldn't drive forward as I'd have run him over.
"I was stunned when he opened the car door and numb with fear as I didn't know what he was going to do.
"He pulled my seatbelt off, swore at me and pulled me out by my jacket.
"I didn't put up a fight, he had his hand behind his back and I didn't know if he had a knife.
"He was very aggressive and seemed spaced out as though he was on something.
"He pushed his face right into mine at one point, it was very frightening."
She managed to grab her handbag which was on the back seat of the car as she was being pulled out.
Ten minutes later the police received a report about a car which had crashed one and a half miles away in Acre Drive in the West of Scotland Science Park off Maryhill Road.
It turned out to be the stolen car but the driver had escaped. Forensic tests are now being carried out and CCTV camera footage is being checked.
Constable Des Clark from Milngavie police office said: "I would urge local people not to be too worried about this incident as it is very unusual for this area.
"I would advise people to be aware as they approach their car and look out for anyone suspicious. It is a good idea to have your car keys in your hand ready to open the door and lock the door once you are inside.
"If anyone approaches your car wind the window down no more than two or three centimetres to talk to them. If you need to attract attention sound the horn."
The suspect is described as being between 20 and 30 years old, white with fair hair and wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans.
