New campaign being launched to tackle dog fouling in East Dunbartonshire
‘WHERE do you stand on dog poo?’ is the name of a hard-hitting campaign being launched by East Dunbartonshire Council on Monday (February 25) for two weeks.
The campaign runs until Saturday, March 9 to reinforce the council’s zero tolerance of dog fouling in East Dunbartonshire.
Aimed at irresponsible dog owners, it will feature on billboards and bus stops throughout the area to demonstrate the issues caused by dog fouling and the penalties that a dog owner can receive if they fail to clean up after their dog. There will also be extra environmental warden patrols with support from partners including waste resources, park rangers service, community protection officers and the police.
Dog fouling is a major problem in East Dunbartonshire - so far this year there have been 273 complaints, which is up by 51 on the previous year, and the number of Fixed Penalty Notices has risen from one to 10.
Depute council leader and convener of housing and community services, Ashay Ghai, said: “We’re seeing more complaints and fixed penalties because people now know who to report incidents to and are more likely to do so knowing that they’re not alone in thinking it’s unacceptable – the whole community does.”
Failing to pick up immediately after a dog is an offence under the Dog Fouling (Scotland) Act 2003 and anyone caught will be issued with a £40 Fixed Penalty Notice (increasing to £60 if not paid within 28 days) by the council’s environmental wardens. After last year’s campaign, any unpaid fixed penalty notices were reported to the Procurator Fiscal and the offenders were issued with either a fine or fiscal warning.
Councillor Ghai added: “There are no excuses for dog fouling, anyone who commits this offence shows a blatant disregard for other people, public health and the environment.
“The pavements, streets, parks, fields and green spaces are for everyone to enjoy and dog owners should be respectful of this and clean up after their dog or face the consequences.”
Dog bins are available in streets throughout East Dunbartonshire and public litter bins can also be used to dispose of bagged dog waste. Free bags are available from council buildings, community centres, police offices and some local supermarkets.
