MP JO SWINSON has commended the world-class work of a local cancer research facility.

Last year, Bearsden’s Beatson Institute received £20million in funding from Cancer Research UK.

At a recent Cancer Research UK parliamentary reception, the MP joined the institute’s director Karen Vousden and other leading cancer research scientists to discuss how this support has helped cutting-edge research into better cancer treatments.

Ms Swinson said: “Research here in East Dunbartonshire plays a highly significant role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Professor Vousden and her colleagues are working on groundbreaking projects – like the institute’s Drug Discovery Unit – which could change the lives of thousands of people with cancer.

“Around three people an hour are diagnosed with cancer in Scotland, so it is heartening to see that the Beatson Institute is making such a positive contribution to this vital cause.”
