Milngavie Tesco faces boycott call
CALLS have been made for a BOYCOTT of Milngavie’s Tesco store.
Angry campaigners say people should withdraw their custom from the shop - over the multinational’s bitterly fought plans for a massive extension.
The dramatic call came at a recent AGM held by action group We Like Milngavie (WLM), which was set up to fight Tesco’s expansion.
Superstore bosses want to dramatically increase the size of their Milngavie operation - and despite being previously knocked back by both East Dunbartonshire Council and the Scottish Government, it has been accused of refusing to scale back its vision as it prepares to submit a new planning application.
Protestors have claimed that a monster new shop will leach the life from Milngavie Precinct.
Calls were made from the floor at WLM’s Fraser Centre AGM for a boycott - and a vote was taken on whether people would support this.
The meeting overwhelmingly voted in favour of refusing to give Tesco custom till it backs down.
WLM’s Eve Gilmore said: “I was heartened at the support given to We Like Milngavie, both by the many members of the public who attended our first AGM and from those who sent messages of support with their apologies. We will continue to spend time trying to get Tesco to genuinely listen to the clear wishes of the community and to give us the right store for Milngavie.”
MP Jo Swinson said: “The AGM was a positive indicator of how the community – along with cross-party support - is pulling together over the battle to stop Tesco building a store double its current size in Milngavie.
“It is extremely positive that We Like Milngavie has a strong team to ensure that the community speaks with one voice. The group will play a vital role in mobilising support and looking at how people can use their power as consumers to ensure that Tesco listens to the genuine concerns of local residents about this redevelopment.”
A Tesco spokeswoman said: “We are currently undertaking extensive consultation with the local community regarding plans for a new Tesco in Milngavie. I would like to encourage individuals and groups to contact me, provide their views and tell me what they would like from a new store.
“We remain committed to investing in Milngavie, delivering a larger supermarket that keeps people from leaving the area to do their shopping and providing the modern shopping experience that our customers tell us they want.”
Meanwhile, Milngavie Community Council has organised a public meeting on the expansion plans, which will take place in October or November to which Tesco have been invited to attend to answer questions about their proposals.
