Milngavie public toilets back on the agenda

MILNGAVIE public toilets could be sold in the future – but no decision has been made yet.

The sale of the public amenity was discussed in private at a recent meeting of East Dunbartonshire Council’s policy and resources committee.

Alistair Crighton, head of East Dunbartonshire legal and democratic services, said: “The committee continued consideration of the sale of the toilets and the matter will be reported back to committee at a future date.”

The toilets on Mugdock Road have been run by precinct traders, Gilbert McVean from The Iron Chef and Ian Lavrie from Townhead Carpets, for the past two years, after East Dunbartonshire Council handed over responsibility for the premises to them.

The council also set aside a budget to keep them open - for repairs and essentials such as toilet roll and soap, and to employ a cleaner.

The toilets were put up for sale by the council early last year and there was one expression of interest at the closing date (May 31).

And local business man Patrick Stevenson, who runs a firm offering walking holidays along the West Highland Way, spoke to The Milngavie and Bearsden Herald last year about his ambitious plans to transform the toilets into bunkhouses for walkers, while retaining a public toilet facility.
