A KILLEARN businessman was awarded an MBE last week for his services to the business community and charity work spanning 20 years.

John Fortune-Fraser (80) was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday honours list and presented with the award by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace last week.

The industrialist and entrepreneur is chairman of Kilsyth-based Tube Developments Ltd, one of the world’s largest private steel stockholders, a company he founded in 1969.

Mr Fraser is originally from Govan and left school at 14 with no qualifications to work as an apprenticeship at Clydeside Shipbuilders before setting up his own company.

The success of the his business was down in large part to the high levels of expertise, product knowledge and competitive pricing that Mr Fraser brought to the company. He also worked with the Variety club of Scotland for more than 20 years, a charitable organisation which helps organise outing for youngsters.

Mr Fraser said: “I had second thoughts about accepting my MBE because I’m modest, but my wife insisted. Buckingham Palace is so magnificent. I’ve seen it from the outside, but when you are actually inside, it is absolutely fantastic.”

On Prince Charles, Mr Fraser said: “He seemed so normal. When he pinned the award on me he just congratulated me and really put me at ease.”

Mr Fraser has been married for 59 year to Tessa and had five children, 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr Fraser is also being recognised for charitable contributions over the last 20 years having served on the Variety Club of Great Britain Scotland Committee.
