A well-established ladies clothes shop in Bearsden could become a Costa Coffee shop as they are interested in renting the building.

The current lease-owners - husband and wife Stuart and Gail Abernethy and their daughter Susie, who is a director of the business - have put the lease for the building up for sale so they can retire from the business.

So far they have had a few interested parties including Costa Coffee but no planning permission for a new business has been submitted yet and a deal has not been finalised yet.

In the meantime Match Box continues to trade as normal

The couple took over the premises for the ladies clothing and accessories shop on Drymen Road in about 1980 and it was named Match Box in 1986.

However Stuart has worked in retail in Bearsden since he was 22 and in the same building as Match Box since the 1960s .

He said: “There have been a lot of rumours circulating about what’s happening to the business but nothing has been confirmed yet and it’s business as usual for us until then.

“I believe that I’m the longest serving trader in Bearsden and it will certainly be sad to leave but I don’t think that will come home to roost until I leave.

“It’s been a lovely place to work and we’ve had fantastic times over the years with a very buoyant business at times.

“Trading is getting more competitive with online shopping and budget chain stores so we are finding it increasingly more difficult.

“We would have liked a smaller premises to continue the business but we couldn’t find anything suitable.

“Alternatively we would have continued under a new lease-owner who would have allowed us to do that. We’ve had a very regular following and we’ve still got original customers from when we first opened and we always give them a good deal to reward their loyalty.

“It’s been a great pleasure dealing with the people here and we’d like to thank everyone who has supported us.”
