Lotto joy for Milngavie and Westerton

A LOCAL school and a nursery are celebrating after being given a cash boost of thousands of pounds from the Big Lottery Fund.

Clober Primary School in Milngavie received 8,531 which they have used to buy outdoor play equipment and Westerton Nursery in Bearsden got 10,000 from the 'Awards for All' scheme.

Westerton Nursery plans to develop an outdoor garden because the children are unable to play outside in their own garden at the moment. The money will cover labour costs for the preparation of the site, creation of a soft play area, hire of machinery and disposal of surplus soil.

They would also like to thank Bearsden North Community Council for 1,000 and the community grants scheme for 1,250.

Nursery manager, Moira Salila, said: "The kids can't wait to have their own dedicated outside area so they can do gardening and play outside.

"The Scottish Government advises that children should be outside for 75 per cent of their day and this garden will make that possible for our children."

Clober Primary School has installed a 'trim trail' exercise circuit with safety mat tiles to increase the amount of physical activity the children get out of school hours.

A spokesperson for the school said: "We'd like to thank the PTA and active schools co-ordinator Karen Black for successfully obtaining the funding for this massive amount of equipment.

"The 'trim trail' is extensive and all the pupils are enjoying the chance to use it during their break times.

"A very big thank you to 'Awards for All' for giving this money and helping to promote healthy playtimes at Clober."

Jo Swinson MP has also welcomed the news that Clober Primary and Westerton Nursery have been awarded grants from the Big Lottery Fund.

She said: "I'm thrilled that these organisations have been successful in securing these grants. Both projects promise to help local children to lead active, healthy lives in improve their wellbeing. Well done to everyone at Clober Primary and Westerton Nursery who helped to secure these awards and I look forward to seeing the play areas once they're completed."

Westerton Nursery needs to raise a total of 33,000 to complete the project and they would like to hear from anyone who can help. Contact Moira Salila on 0780 4968939.
