Two inspirational local lads enjoyed a starring role in welcoming the world to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Iain Greer from Bearsden Academy and Craig Shanks from Douglas Academy took part in the Opening Ceremony at Celtic Park on July 23.
They rubbed shoulders with other young volunteers from all over Scotland at the star-studded event, which was watched by an estimated 1.5 billion people across the globe.
Iain and Craig represented East Dunbartonshire’s ‘2nd Teams’ - Norfolk Island, Namibia and Jamaica - at the ceremony after they were successful in an audition - supported by Active Schools.
They received Norfolk Island, Namibia and Jamaica’s flags from the teams after they were welcomed into the stadium. And they lined the pathway when the Commonwealth flag was being carried through and also got the chance to show off their dancing skills to spectators.
Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The pupils were chosen after they submitted a short video clip of themselves talking about the Commonwealth Games and their 2nd Team.
“Well done to them on their selection - it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to help make history in Glasgow. They are a credit to East Dunbartonshire and our 2nd Teams, and I hope they treasure the memories of such a momentous occasion.”
