A CONCERT to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens birth last year is going to be held on Saturday, March 9 in Milngavie’s Fraser Centre.

The performance of “Hard Times” will feature a lively and entertaining selection of songs from his life and times.

All money raised on the night will be donated to the Suzy Fund, which feeds poor children across the world, in memory of popular Milngavie man Erne Parkin as this was his chosen charity.

Joe Murray, one of the event organisers, said: “Charles Dickens, writer, journalist, social reformer and one of the world’s best known novelists also had an encyclopaedic knowledge of and interest in the music of his time in all its forms.

“This included street ballads and broadsides, patriotic songs, popular minstrel songs, classical Georgian and Victorian parlour songs, quirky comic songs from the supper clubs and Free and Easies - and traditional glees and folk songs – some of which have been revived in more recent times.

“We have collected together a diverse selection of these songs, reflecting the human and social issues of the day and relating to some of the main concerns of this radical social reformer. These are interspersed with short passages from his works, many of which make direct reference to the songs, and short contemporary accounts which throw light on the conditions of 19th century citizens of all classes.

“We hope that the songs and readings, against a backdrop of atmospheric projected slides and images from 19th century, will provide some interesting and entertaining glimpses of the life and times of Charles Dickens.”

Tickets cost £8 (concession £6) and they are available from Milngavie Bookshop and The Iron Chef. Doors open 7pm, start 7.30pm.
