A Scottish Terrier from Drymen had the honour of leading out two teams at the recent opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

Radley took centre stage by first of all leading out the South African team at Parkhead and then because there was such a shortage of suitable Scottie dogs she had to change quickly before leading out the England team as well.

Her owner Heather Hodgson, said: “It was one of the best experiences of my life and Radley performed brilliantly on the night, she had a really great time and I was very proud of her.

“Luckily she was on top form for the main event as she’d disgraced herself at a dress rehearsal on Monday when she did a poo in the arena!”

The cute dog, who was named after the famous designer accessory company who are best known for their handbags with Scottish terrier logos, is 18 months old and belongs to Heather’s 12-year-old daughter Robyn.

Robyn, who is a pupil at Lomond School, was too young to take part in the ceremony but she was in the audience to watch her favourite pet’s moment of fame in the Commonwealth Games.

Heather (49), who is a specialist nurse in hospitals around Glasgow, added: “When I took Radley to her groomers they told me that the Commonwealth Games were desperately looking for dogs like her to take part in the opening ceremony and that I should apply.

“They snapped her up straight away and we had to do two dress rehearsals - one the Saturday before with an audience of 10,000 people, and another on the Monday in front of 25,000 spectators.

“Radley got a bit tired and I had to carry her around on the Monday - I think it was all a bit too much for her - but by the night itself she’d recovered and was raring to go.

“She seemed to love all the attention and excitement on the night and it’s wonderful that she’s now become part of Commonwealth Games history.”

Unfortunately Heather’s husband David (49) didn’t get to see Radley on the night because he was working as he’s with the British Transport Police.
